How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote and list on the BOL as “Napkin/letter holders, sheet steel or steel wire, NMFC 99800, Class 85, boxed.” This avoids density-based reclass and clarifies the boxed packaging.
- Protect finishes and wire frames: polybag each piece, add kraft wrap or partitions, and use snug, double‑wall cartons. Example: 24 wire holders in an 18x18x12 carton with divider cells.
- Palletize cartons with no overhang on a 48x40 pallet, add a top cap, and use two straps plus stretch wrap to prevent compression and scuffing of thin sheet or wire forms.
- Confirm the item is not a cabinet/box-type organizer, which classifies differently. Keep piece counts, carton dimensions, and carton weight on the label for accurate LTL pricing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable Class 85 rating reduces reclass fees and disputes, speeding up quotes and invoicing for boxed metal desk/kitchen accessories.
- Box-only packaging lowers OS&D risk by standardizing handling, improving claim ratios and carrier acceptance across networks.
- Metal construction allows efficient nesting and tighter cube in cartons, lowering cost per unit through better pallet density.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and removes hazmat accessorials, simplifying routing and reducing total landed cost.
