How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bill as NMFC 103770, Class 50, with packaging noted as “packages”; no density details are required for rating.
  2. Pack units in sturdy cartons with dividers or tight banded bundles; add edge guards where steel meets wood to prevent rub-through and staining.
  3. Moisture-manage the wood and protect steel: poly bag or shrink-wrap bundles, add VCI paper around steel components, and keep cartons off the floor on a clean pallet deck.
  4. Consolidate multiple cartons onto a 48x40 pallet, keep weight centered, and mark Top/Do Not Stack if hardware could induce strain or crush damage in transit.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 50 simplifies quoting and forecasting, giving utilities and fencing suppliers predictable LTL rates.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and reduces special handling fees or compliance delays.
  • Clear packaging definition (“in packages”) lowers reclass risk and dispute costs, speeding freight audit and payment.
  • Better-protected assemblies cut claim rates and downtime on job sites, improving project schedules and total landed cost.
