How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your product type: steel clothesline posts, municipal sign poles, or channel iron uprights qualify under NMFC 104880 when shipped loose or bundled.
- Bundle for safe handling: align ends, add wood runners, strap in three points, and cap sharp ends. Long pieces over 8 ft ride better on skids or pipe racks.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Steel Clothes/Sign Posts, NMFC 104880, Class 50, non-hazardous,” with piece and bundle counts. Note the longest length to prevent overlength surprises.
- Prevent damage in transit: use edge protectors under straps and block bundles to stop rolling. If shipping channel iron, review Note, item 104881 to confirm applicability.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 keeps LTL rates competitive for dense steel posts, improving job margins for sign installers and site crews.
- Density-neutral classification speeds quoting and reduces reclass exposure when properly described as loose or packaged bundles.
- Flexibility to ship loose or in packages streamlines outbound from fab shops and distributors, cutting handling time and accessorials.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier choice and avoids hazmat fees, lowering total landed cost.
