How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 105920 and “Pile Shoes, in packages, Class 50” on the BOL to avoid reclass fees and speed dock processing.
- Bundle shoes with heavy-duty banding and tip guards; palletize with no overhang, four-way entry, and edge protection to prevent punctures.
- Face pointed ends inward or cap them, add blocking/dunnage under the bundle, then stretch-wrap and top-cap for unitized handling.
- Plan delivery to jobsites: request liftgate or forklift, add call-ahead/appointment as needed, and include piece counts and material spec (iron or steel).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 for packaged steel lowers base rates compared to lighter, higher-class freight.
- No density calculation required, simplifying quotes and reducing audit or inspection delays.
- Packaged status improves carrier acceptance and reduces damage claims on forged or fabricated tips.
- Clean documentation and consistent labeling minimize OS&D disputes and prevent accessorials from rework.
