How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 107100 and Class 50 on the BOL; include piece count and approximate lengths (e.g., 24 rods, 25 ft each) to avoid reclass delays.
- Bundle rods tightly with steel banding in 6–12 piece packs, set on 4x4 dunnage or cradle pallets, and use wedges/chocks to prevent rolling in dry vans.
- Protect threaded ends and couplings with caps; add rubber or cardboard separators between bars to prevent scuffing and abrasion.
- For extra-long or heavy bundles, request a flatbed with pipe stakes or a Conestoga; use corner protectors under straps for secure, claim-free transit.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 delivers predictable LTL rates and straightforward quoting for oilfield rod shipments.
- Correct use of NMFC 107100 on paperwork cuts reclass fees, rebills, and dock holds.
- Proper bundling and cradle loading reduce handling time and damage claims, improving delivery reliability.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies compliance and avoids hazmat surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
