Notes
Note 107502: NOTE-Applies on rolled wire rods, or rolled chain iron or steel, not drawn through a die, in coils, not in straight lengths, not less than 8 gauge nor over 1 1/4 inches in diameter, which may be transported on open vehicles without damage from the weather.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book as NMFC 107500, Class 50, and write “wire rods or chain iron, in coils” on the BOL; reference Note item 107502 if your product is chain rod.
- Place coils on sturdy pallets with wooden coil saddles or cradles; use eye-to-the-sky for stability or eye-to-the-side when tightly strapped to a cradle.
- Band each coil with two or more steel straps through the eye and across the OD; add edge protectors, stretch wrap, and a cover to contain slivers and prevent rust transfer.
- State coil count, individual and total weight, and any handling limits (forklift only, no stacking). Include OD/ID/width for safer handling, even though not required for class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 keeps dense steel coils rated favorably, lowering per‑pound LTL costs for mills, processors, and fabricators.
- No density calculation simplifies quotes and TMS rules, cutting reclass audits and speeding time to tender.
- Correct cradling and banding reduce damage and claims, protecting downstream processes like drawing, chain making, and welding.
- Clear non‑haz documentation (NMFC 107500) accelerates dock throughput and avoids extra fees tied to inspections or repacks.
