How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure the packed box, weigh the shipment, and calculate pounds per cubic foot to select the correct class within 50–400 for NMFC 108107.
  2. Package to Item 170: use sturdy corrugated boxes, inner trays or pouches to separate tools and supplies, and seal absorbents or liquids in secondary poly bags.
  3. Keep it non-haz: exclude flares and loose lithium batteries. If a kit includes batteries, ship them separately or follow applicable battery shipping rules.
  4. Label cartons clearly as “Emergency Kits – NMFC 108107 – Density Based” and note orientation for any liquid components to prevent leakage and rework.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Right-size boxing and tighter kitting raise density, unlocking lower freight classes and immediate LTL cost savings.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat accessorials, reducing transit constraints and fees.
  • Accurate density declarations minimize reweigh/reclass penalties and speed dock processing for time-sensitive preparedness supplies.
  • Standardized boxed packaging streamlines 3PL fulfillment and simplifies multi-location restocks for safety and facility teams.
