How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 108390 and Class 85 on the BOL, describing the commodity as “welding accessory kits” packed in boxes.
- Protect the mixed contents: use dividers for helmets and masks, sleeves for lenses, bag wire brushes, cap electrode holders, and coil cable; bundle rods/wire with edge protection.
- Choose heavy-duty corrugated boxes with secure void fill; tape seams with reinforced tape and mark “This Side Up” and “Fragile: Lenses” where appropriate.
- When shipping multiple kits, unitize boxes on a 48x40 pallet, keep everything within the pallet footprint, then strap and stretch-wrap to minimize loss and extra handling fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies rating—no density calculation, faster quotes, and fewer reclass surprises.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
- Kitting small welding tools into one boxed SKU reduces handling units, shrink risk, and claim exposure.
- Clear, box-ready packaging guidance helps pass carrier inspections, preventing reweigh/reclass fees and delivery delays.
