How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Package loose materials securely: seal welding compound and sand in inner bags before boxing so fines don’t sift out during LTL handling.
- Keep metal disks and punchings bundled or sleeved inside the box to prevent shifting that can crush sand molds.
- Palletize boxed kits with edge protectors and stretch wrap; mark “This Side Up” to keep molds intact and avoid leakage.
- Use a precise BOL description: “Welding kits, sand molds, welding compound, metal disks and punchings, in boxes, NMFC 108450, Class 70, non-hazardous.”
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 70—no density calculations, fewer reclass disputes, faster quoting.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges, special paperwork, and carrier restrictions.
- Standard boxed packaging stacks efficiently, improving cube utilization and reducing handling damage risks.
- Clear item definition (materials listed) supports clean audits and helps prevent accessorials tied to misdescription.
