How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 110100 when shipping boxed lead articles not otherwise indexed, such as shielding bricks, cast counterweights, or extruded bars—exclude batteries, scrap, or liquids.
- Pack in heavy-duty corrugated boxes (double-wall 275# burst or 51–61 ECT). Line with plastic or kraft to contain residue and add blocking so pieces can’t shift or puncture.
- Keep each box within carrier lift limits (often 75–100 lb per box if hand handled). Example: 60 lb lead bricks—two bricks per box with fiberboard dividers and edge protection.
- Palletize multiple boxes on sturdy wood pallets; center the weight, add corner boards, stretch wrap, and steel or poly strapping. Mark boxes “Heavy” and note piece count on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing reclass disputes.
- Accurate use of the NOI item curbs surprise adjustment charges and keeps tariffs predictable.
- Reinforced boxing and proper palletization cut damage risk on dense metal freight, lowering OS&D costs.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies carrier acceptance and documentation.
