How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack lighters in sturdy boxes with internal dividers or foam so ignition mechanisms don’t rub or spark during transit.
- Use corner protection for metal or metal-and-wood bodies to prevent dents, especially on retail-ready or gift-set lighters.
- Label cartons by item count and model to speed receiving; keep SKU lists outside the box in a pouch for quick checks.
- Do not co-pack fuel canisters; ship boxed lighters alone to maintain the non-hazardous classification and avoid delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk for boxed, metal-body lighters.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and paperwork, accelerating pickup and delivery.
- Clear NMFC mapping supports cleaner audits and fewer billing disputes, improving cash flow predictability.
- Standardized box packaging makes it easy to consolidate with other housewares for fuller, cheaper LTL moves.
