How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the spec: sawdust or ground wood with resin binder under 10%, no surface covering, not bent or curved. If laminated or used as flooring, reclassification may apply.
- Palletize flat bundles (e.g., 4x8 sheets) with edge protectors, slip sheets, and two to three steel or poly bands. Avoid pallet overhang to prevent edge crumble.
- Keep panels dry and rigid in transit. Use stretch wrap or shrink film plus a protective top sheet, and add dunnage between layers to stop scuffing and clamp damage.
- Bill as “Boards, compressed sawdust, no surface covering, NMFC 112320, Class 55.” Include accurate bundle count and actual weight; dimensions help space planning even though the class is weight-based.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 rating streamlines quoting and reduces reclass disputes common with density-rated wood products.
- Bundling sheets on one pallet lowers handling touches and can reduce per-sheet LTL costs and minimum charges.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies compliance across regional and national lanes.
- Accurate description (no surface covering, resin under 10%) helps avoid inspections, accessorials, and surprise re-rates.
