How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Secure each block to a hardwood skid using lag bolts through blocking, then add steel banding and edge protectors to keep the dense steel from shifting.
- Mark the center of gravity and lifting points; use a 4-way pallet or fork tunnels so tines fully support the block and avoid tip-overs during cross-docks.
- Crate single pieces with 3/4 in plywood and internal cleats; block and brace to prevent abrasion, add oil-resistant wrap, and label gross weight on two sides.
- On the BOL, write 'Anvil Blocks, power hammer – NMFC 114170, Class 65, non-hazardous'; request liftgate or inside delivery if the shop lacks a dock.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing at fixed Class 65, avoiding density disputes and unexpected reweigh/reclass fees.
- Proper skidding and bracing reduce damage risk to machined faces, lowering claim exposure and downtime in the forge shop.
- Accurate NMFC citation speeds carrier acceptance and quoting, keeping rush rebuilds or maintenance jobs on schedule.
- Ability to consolidate multiple blocks on one robust skid can cut handling touches and reduce LTL minimum charges.
