How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging by stability: crate tall, top‑heavy sifters; sturdy boxes fit compact blenders with internal bracing around screens and bearings.
- Bolt the machine to a skid, lock vibration drives, and remove loose hoppers, feeders, or chutes; bag and label hardware, then secure inside the same crate.
- Write the NMFC on the BOL: “NMFC 114480, Class 85 – Flour sifter/blender, crated or boxed.” Add Do Not Tip and Keep Dry orientation labels.
- Lower the center of gravity with blocking, protect sensitive sieves with foam and edge guards, and line the crate to contain residual flour dust.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable LTL pricing—no density math, fewer quote surprises.
- One code covers stand‑alone sifters, blenders, and sifter‑hopper/elevator‑feeder combos, streamlining procurement and paperwork.
- Proper crating minimizes screen and motor damage, reducing claims and downtime for mills and bakeries.
- Accurate NMFC usage and packaging reduce reclass fees and accessorials, improving total landed cost.
