How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 115160 and Class 300 on the BOL and label the unit “Magnetic Equipment – Keep Metal Clear” to prevent stray ferrous items from sticking during handling.
- If shipping loose, block and brace the base, lock the conveyor in place, secure guards, and cap protrusions. Use polyester straps near the magnet rather than steel banding.
- If skidded, bolt the frame to solid hardwood skids and add plywood shields over the magnet and belt area. Wrap controls and junction boxes to keep dust and moisture out.
- De-energize electromagnets, install keeper plates or steel covers on permanent magnets, and verify lift points and center of gravity before forklift or crane loading.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 300 streamlines quoting and tendering—no density calculation, faster LTL rate comparisons.
- Accurate NMFC use prevents costly reclass/reweigh disputes and limits accessorials tied to misdeclared machinery.
- Proper magnet shielding and conveyor lockout reduce damage claims, avoid dock delays, and protect nearby freight.
- Skidded or well-braced units load faster and safer, cutting detention and minimizing handling time at origination and delivery.
