How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 115180 and Class 100 on the BOL and label the unit as a Can Shredder to avoid confusion with document/paper shredders.
- If shipping loose, block and brace the base to the trailer e‑track and immobilize the cutting chamber with blade guards or plywood covers; apply lockout tags for used units.
- When skidding, band through the frame (not guards) with 2 in. steel or polyester strapping, use edge protectors, and mark center of gravity for safe forklift handling.
- Protect protrusions like hoppers and discharge chutes with foam and corner boards; cover sharp edges to reduce damage risk and claims during LTL transfers.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 100 rating simplifies rate shopping and avoids density reweigh headaches.
- Lower risk of reclass: clear NMFC mapping for can shredders reduces inspection fees and billing disputes.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines paperwork and minimizes accessorials tied to hazardous declarations.
- Packaging flexibility (loose or skidded) cuts crating costs and speeds dock turns for refurbishers and MRFs.
