How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density first: weigh the shipment and divide by cubic feet to pick the correct class (77.5–200). Example: 1,200 lb on 20 cu ft = 60 pcf.
- Match packaging to the unit: crate full frames and monoblocs, box control panels and small subassemblies, and strap large machines to skids if shipping loose.
- Prep the equipment: drain and purge fluids, lock out moving turrets and conveyors, remove glass guards, wrap sensors and HMI screens, and mark center of gravity.
- Document clearly on the BOL: “Bottlers' machinery, NMFC 115200, density X pcf, class Y,” include weight, dimensions, and note non-hazardous, dry equipment.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density-based class avoids reweigh/reclass fees and keeps LTL rates predictable for beverage plants and OEMs.
- Right packaging (crates or well-palletized loose) cuts damage risk on sensitive fillers, cappers, and labelers, reducing claim costs and downtime.
- Consistent use of NMFC 115200 speeds quoting and carrier selection across lanes, improving lead times to co-packers and bottling facilities.
- Clear preparation (drained and secured) minimizes accessorials like limited handling or protective service, lowering total landed freight cost.
