How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bolt the can seamer or header to a skid or steel base, then block and brace the frame. Remove or lock seaming heads and guard delicate tooling with foam and caps.
- Crate for LTL: build a rigid crate, add shock indicators, and mark upright arrows. Use edge protectors and stretch wrap, and secure power cords and control panels.
- Publish true handling points: tag fork pockets and lift eyes, note center of gravity, and add Do Not Tip labels. Include photos and dimensions of the packed unit.
- Before pickup, drain lubricants if required, tighten transport locks, and list NMFC 116340 on the BOL with Class N/A. Provide total weight including base and crate.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Faster quoting and fewer reclass debates by citing a clear NMFC entry for can closing and seaming machinery.
- Lower damage risk on precision seaming heads and chucks through crate-and-brace packaging, reducing downtime on filling lines.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps avoid hazmat surcharges, improving LTL rate competitiveness.
- Clean documentation (NMFC 116340, packed dims, handling notes) minimizes exceptions and unexpected accessorials at delivery.
