How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack iron canning kettle/retort crates or trays inside sturdy wood crates with internal blocking. Add edge guards and corrugated pads between trays to prevent abrasion.
- Nest trays where possible and secure the crated unit to a 48x40 pallet with steel or heavy poly banding. Keep center of gravity low and allow 4-way forklift entry.
- Moisture matters for iron: line the crate with VCI paper or plastic, then seal to limit rust during transit—especially for coastal or humid lanes.
- On the BOL, list “Canning Kettle or Retort Crates or Trays, iron – NMFC 116420, Class 100.” Add “Non-hazardous” and include piece counts for fast processing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: a fixed Class 100 minimizes reclass exposure and speeds up LTL rate quoting.
- Lower claims: rigid crating and blocking protect iron frames from bends, keeping retort fit-up accurate and reducing scrap or rework.
- Food-plant readiness: clean, sealed packaging prevents oil and debris transfer, avoiding QC holds at processors and keeping line downtime low.
- Better cube efficiency: nesting trays and right-sized crates increase units per pallet, cutting cost per piece on multi-stop LTL.
