How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Match packaging to the item: heavy vats, separators, or pasteurizers go in reinforced crates; pumps and small controls in double‑wall boxes; strap to skids with 4‑way entry.
  2. Protect sanitary surfaces: drain and dry lines, cap all ports, and wrap stainless food‑contact areas with clean film and edge guards to prevent dents and contamination.
  3. Stabilize moving parts: remove or lock agitators, gauges, and sensors; add shock/tilt indicators; mark center of gravity and lift points for safe LTL handling.
  4. Document clearly: cite “NMFC 117100” on the BOL, note packaging type (box, crate, or package), describe the specific machine (e.g., creamery pump, cheese vat), and insure for replacement value.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Correct NMFC use minimizes reclass fees and keeps quotes aligned with the 85–150 class range for predictable LTL budgeting.
  • Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and speeds tendering, reducing delays and hazmat-related accessorials.
  • Packaging flexibility (boxes, crates, packages) lets you optimize footprint and protection, improving cost per cwt and lowering damage claims.
  • Clean, drained equipment shortens receiving time at dairies and avoids contamination disputes that can trigger chargebacks.
