How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging that fits NMFC 117280: boxed or crated. The class falls within 85–100 based on that choice; confirm with your carrier before rating.
- Prevent ovalizing and edge dents. Nest similar diameters with cardboard or foam pads, band to a pallet through dunnage, and add corner/edge protectors inside boxes or crates.
- Control corrosion and cleanliness for dairy use. Wrap steel hoops in VCI or poly, cap sharp edges, and avoid bundling bare metal that can rub and scuff.
- Document counts clearly. Mark each pack with hoop size and quantity, include photos of bracing, and label as “Machinery—Cheese Molds” for quicker dock handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fewer reclasses and disputes by matching packaging to the 85–100 range, protecting margins on repeat dairy equipment lanes.
- Lower claim exposure from denting or out‑of‑round damage via rigid bracing and edge protection tailored to ring‑shaped steel parts.
- Faster quoting and mode selection; non‑hazardous status and clear NMFC mapping streamline LTL tendering and rate shopping.
- Better cube efficiency when hoops are nested and palletized, reducing billable space and improving freight rates versus loose packs.
