How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm NMFC 117340 applies: bulk milk coolers or storage tanks (not milk can cooling cabinets). Choose box or crate and verify if your item rates at class 110 or 125.
- Prepare the unit: drain and sanitize the vessel, cap tri‑clamp ports, lock or remove agitators, and shield compressors or cooling coils to avoid vibration damage.
- Crate securely: bolt the tank to skids, block and brace inside the crate, pad the stainless shell to prevent dents, and mark center of gravity and required orientation.
- Document handling needs: list overall dimensions including skids and guards, note forklift pocket clearance, request liftgate or farm pickup when needed, and add photos for carrier inspection.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct use of NMFC 117340 with class 110–125 avoids reclass fees and keeps LTL quotes accurate and predictable.
- Purposeful crating for heavy stainless tanks reduces damage to agitators and refrigeration assemblies, cutting claims and downtime for dairies and creameries.
- Non‑hazardous, non‑density rating streamlines booking—fewer data points, faster quotes, and quicker dispatch to time‑sensitive installations.
- Removing protrusions and protecting fittings lowers handling complexity and oversize surcharges, driving down total freight spend.
