How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State on the BOL: “Chlorinators, NOI, or Ammoniators in boxes or crates — NMFC 117550, Class 85.” This avoids reclass and speeds carrier acceptance.
- Drain, purge, and cap all lines; remove any gas cylinders or chemical feed containers. Bag small fittings and secure meters, valves, and probes inside the box or crate.
- Use dense foam around control heads and injection points, then block and brace the unit so it cannot shift. Add ‘This Side Up’ arrows and shock indicators for delicate controllers.
- If shipping accessories separately, nest them in inner cartons within the main crate and list each carton count on the packing list for clean piece counts.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 pricing enables predictable LTL quotes and apples-to-apples rate shopping for water treatment projects.
- Non-hazardous status reduces paperwork and avoids hazmat accessorials, lowering total landed cost.
- Clear NOI description and proper packaging cut down on reclass fees, inspection delays, and damage claims.
- Standardized NMFC item streamlines procurement for municipalities, pool facilities, and OEM service teams coordinating recurring maintenance shipments.
