How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the NMFC description on your BOL: “Composters, stand and drum with cranking mechanism,” and note if each unit ships boxed, palletized, assembled, or knockdown.
- Immobilize the drum and crank handle to stop rotation in transit—zip-tie the handle, block the drum with foam or corrugated bracing, and add edge protectors where straps contact the frame.
- When palletizing, strap through the stand (not over the drum), keep drain or vent openings facing up, and choose a pallet that fully supports the frame footprint to prevent flex and puncture.
- Measure to the furthest protrusion (handle, axle caps) for accurate dimensions, and label sides with Do Not Tip/Do Not Stack if the drum cannot bear top load.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correct NMFC identification reduces reclass and inspection fees, helping LTL quotes hold firm from pickup to delivery.
- Optimized packaging—knockdown frames or nested drums—cuts cube and improves stackability, lowering per‑unit freight costs for retailers and distributors.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and simplifies routing, supporting faster tendering and fewer compliance delays.
- Securing the crank and drum lowers damage risk and claims, protecting margins on seasonal garden equipment and big‑box replenishments.
