How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Determine PCF under Item 170: weigh the packed unit and calculate cubic feet (L × W × H ÷ 1728). Include pallet and overhang. Higher density typically yields a lower class within 50–400.
  2. Prepare the mechanical apparatus: drain reservoirs, cap lines, secure the compressor with transit bolts or dense foam blocking, and guard spigots/thermostats. Add upright and tilt indicators; brace the unit inside the carton or crate.
  3. Match packaging to NMFC options: ship in boxes, crates, or Packages 107, 1132, or 2457 that meet carrier standards. Example: a floor cooler 20×20×45 in at 85 lb ≈ 10.4 cu ft, about 8.2 PCF.
  4. Document precisely on the BOL: “Coolers or Dispensers, beverage or water, with mechanical apparatus — density-based, subject to Item 170,” include the PCF and mark non-hazardous. List accessorials like liftgate or residential.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven rating lets you lower LTL spend by right-sizing cartons and consolidating units so the handling unit achieves a better class.
  • Accurate NMFC language reduces reclass/rebill risk and inspection delays, protecting margins on office, hospitality, and breakroom deployments.
  • Robust immobilization of compressors and faucets cuts damage claims and prevents costly replacements and service calls.
  • Standardizing to Packages 107/1132/2457 streamlines quoting and carrier acceptance, speeding order-to-ship cycles and improving schedule reliability.
