How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print the exact description on the BOL: “Magnesia Refractory, Not Dead Burned — NMFC 133500, Class 50.” No density entry is required for rating.
- Protect against moisture pickup: use poly-lined bags, inner liners in boxes, or tight-closing fiber/steel drums. Stretch-wrap and hood the pallet; add a top sheet and desiccant when humidity is high.
- For boxed powder, choose double‑wall corrugated with a sealed liner and water‑resistant tape. Unitize 40–50 lb bags or inner cartons on a sturdy pallet, no overhang, and apply corner boards.
- Separate from foodstuffs and label for dust control. Include an SDS for handling guidance and note “Do Not Top Load” if using fragile paper bags.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 simplifies pricing and accelerates quoting, delivering predictable LTL costs without density calculations.
- Non‑hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, paperwork, and specialized training.
- Right‑sized packaging (drums vs. bags/boxes) cuts spill cleanups and claim risk, reducing accessorials and downtime.
- Accurate NMFC labeling prevents reclass/reweigh disputes, safeguarding margins and improving on‑time performance.
