How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Match your freight to the right sub-item (gin stands, feeders, lint cleaners, press parts) and packaging; classes span 70-125 based on item and pack.
  2. Crate or box heavy frames and motors to target lower classes (often 70/85) and reduce handling risk; loose pieces may rate as high as Class 125.
  3. Bolt machinery to skids with 4-way forklift entry, block rotating shafts and guards, and wrap to keep lint and dust out; mark center-of-gravity and lift points.
  4. Write “Cotton Ginning Machinery, NMFC 118400” on the BOL with piece count and packaging type (box/crate/package/loose) for faster carrier approval.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower landed cost: choosing the proper class by component and packaging avoids reclass fees and can move freight from 125 to 85.
  • Fewer claims and delays: crating and bolt-down skids stabilize top-heavy gin modules, cutting OS&D and keeping gins running in peak season.
  • Quicker terminal handling: clear item labeling and non-hazmat status streamline processing, reducing dwell time and accessorial disputes.
  • Simplified quoting: non–density-based rules let you standardize rates on recurring boxed or crated shipments and forecast LTL spend confidently.
