How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select the right pack: heavy cast elbows or valve bodies go in blocked and braced crates; lighter aluminum or small diameters fit double-wall boxes. Cap flanged ends and bag loose hardware.
- Mark orientation clearly when actuator stems or gauges protrude, and add arrows or ‘Do Not Stack’ as needed. List NMFC 118460 and Class 125 on the BOL for quick rating.
- Bundle multiple elbows/valves with corrugate or foam separators to prevent metal-to-metal abrasion, then strap to a skid so round sections don’t roll during handling.
- Document contents by size, count, and any linings (e.g., UHMW/rubber). Photograph packed items before sealing to support claims and speed receiving checks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with a fixed Class 125—no density calculation or remeasure fees.
- Fewer reclasses and accessorials by using the specified boxes or crates and accurate NMFC wording.
- Lower damage rates when flanges are capped and crates are braced, protecting elbows and valve actuators.
- Faster dock throughput and cleaner audits when labels, orientation marks, and BOL cite NMFC 118460.
