How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote LTL using Class 85 and NMFC 119280; note pump style (hydraulic or electric-drive ready) and whether it’s palletized or crated.
- Prep the unit: drain residual fluids, cap suction/discharge ports with threaded plugs or protective caps, cover the shaft seal, then strap and stretch-wrap.
- Stabilize for transit by bolting the base to a skid and blocking around the casing; mark center of gravity and add “Do Not Stack” cones if fittings protrude.
- Plan handling: request a liftgate for heavier pumps and ensure forklift tines reach the skid; flag limited-access delivery for job sites or maintenance shops.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 85 avoids density-based reclassifications and simplifies carrier comparisons.
- Lower damage and cleanup risks when ports are capped and units are crated, reducing claims and accessorial fees.
- Faster tendering and fewer documentation hurdles thanks to non-hazmat status and a clear NMFC number.
- Operational efficiency: consistent classification helps warehouses stage, label, and turn pump inventory more quickly.
