How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose approved packing: sturdy boxes, wood crates, or tightly strapped pallets/lift‑truck skids. Add edge guards and top/bottom dunnage to protect wear surfaces.
- Distribute weight evenly on the pallet and keep the center of gravity low. Example: stack steel refiner plates flat with spacers and use at least two cross-bands.
- Prevent corrosion by wrapping in VCI paper or applying a light oil film, then poly overwrap. Mark handling sides to avoid metal-on-metal abrasion.
- On the BOL, list the full NMFC: "Disks or Plates, attrition/refiner, iron or steel — NMFC 119590 — Class 65 — Non-Hazmat." No density entry needed.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 65 reduces reclass disputes and surprise fees.
- Packaging flexibility (box, crate, or strapped pallet) lowers special handling charges and speeds dock turns.
- Dense iron/steel parts price efficiently at Class 65, improving cost per hundredweight versus higher-class items.
- Clear NMFC identification improves carrier acceptance, trims inspection delays, and lowers claim risk.
