Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
11980.00 Doors, entrance or exit, personnel, passenger or cargo, including Bomb Bay and Landing Gear Doors, in boxes or crates 150

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Identify the exact door type (passenger, cargo, bomb bay, landing gear) and mark PN/SN on the BOL and exterior labels; include ATA references and bag small hardware in a sealed pouch.
  2. Protect edges and skins: cap hinges and latches with foam, apply anti-scratch film, add corner guards, and immobilize the panel with bracing and nylon straps; consider shock/tilt indicators on the crate.
  3. Match packaging to weight and rigidity: double-wall box with foam-in-place for lighter composite doors, or ISPM‑15 wood crate with internal blocking for heavier metal assemblies; ensure forklift clearance and “This Side Up/Do Not Stack” markings.
  4. Distribute support along the hinge line and opposite edge to prevent twist; use spreader bars or cross-bracing, document the packout with photos, and record exterior dimensions for accurate LTL quotes.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 150 eliminates density disputes, producing consistent quotes and fewer reclass fees.
  • Proper boxing/crating cuts damage risk, avoiding costly AOG delays and replacement lead times.
  • Clear NMFC mapping speeds carrier approvals and pickup, improving MRO and line maintenance turnaround.
  • Standards-based packaging boosts carrier liability acceptance and on-time performance, reducing OS&D claims.
