Notes

Note 12071: NOTE-Unpowered ultralight vehicles are defined in 14 CFR 103 of the regulations of the Federal Aviation Administration.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Verify the item is a complete glider (not a glider kit) and note NMFC 12070 on the BOL; label cartons “Unpowered Glider—Do Not Stack” for clearer handling.
  2. Disassemble for transport: remove wings/control frames, bag sailcloth, cap exposed tubes, and foam-wrap tips; brace inside the crate to prevent lateral shift.
  3. Choose packaging by build: rigid wing or high-value frames go in wood crates with internal blocking; recreational hang gliders may ship in reinforced boxes with skids.
  4. Book at fixed Class 300 (no density needed); watch for oversize length surcharges on long spars/booms (e.g., >96 in) and pre-request accessorials like liftgate or limited access.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 300 simplifies rating and quoting, cutting reclass disputes and short-pay risk.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees and documentation time.
  • Box or crate specification reduces damage exposure, lowering claims and insurance premiums for delicate airframes and sailcloth.
  • Clear separation from glider kits prevents misbilling, protects margins, and speeds carrier acceptance for event or resale shipments.
