How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack facings in rigid cartons with dividers or sleeves; cushion edges to prevent chipping and mark cartons “Do Not Bend.” Add poly bags to contain friction dust.
  2. Palletize on a 40x48 in pallet; limit stack height to about 48 in for stability. Use corner boards, two straps in each direction, and full stretch wrap for containment.
  3. Keep moisture and oils away from the friction material; add desiccant if transiting humid lanes or cross-docks. Store and ship flat to avoid warping.
  4. Write the BOL clearly: “Facings, clutch, in packages — NMFC 120970 — Class 70 — Non-hazardous.” Don’t combine on the same line with metal flywheels or pressure plates.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 rating: predictable LTL pricing without density calculations, improving quote speed and budget accuracy.
  • Non-hazardous designation reduces paperwork and carrier restrictions, streamlining tendering and transit planning.
  • Proper packaging minimizes claim risk on brittle friction rings, lowering total landed cost and protecting margin.
  • Single, simple classification supports aftermarket distribution—easier consolidation of multiple SKUs and faster replenishment.
