How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Choose packaging by build: use double-wall boxes for lighter power heads and fully skidded wood crates for heavy or awkward surfacers; block and brace to immobilize motors and gearboxes.
- Remove or sheath blades, chisels, and scraping shoes; bundle accessories and fasteners in labeled inner cartons, and add edge guards to prevent punctures through the container.
- Prep power units before pickup: drain fuel and oils from combustion models, cap hydraulic ports, secure cords and control handles, and add desiccant to mitigate jobsite moisture.
- Print NMFC 121290, Class 85 on the BOL; specify box or crate packaging, palletize for forklift handling, and prearrange liftgate or limited-access if delivering to a jobsite.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 (non-density) pricing simplifies quoting and prevents costly reweigh/reclass disputes for surfacing tools and their parts.
- Right-size packaging (box vs crate) cuts cube without risking damage, lowering LTL minimum charges and avoiding special handling fees.
- Better protection for powerheads and housings reduces damage claims and downtime, keeping contractors and facility crews on schedule.
- Clear separation and labeling of parts NOI accelerates receiving, reduces mis-picks, and minimizes missing-component claims.
