How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Reference NMFC 123410 on the BOL and note Item 123411 when units include doors, shelves, or freezing trays to confirm they’re covered at Class 150.
- Use rigid boxes or wood crates with foam blocking and fin guards; add corner protection and a moisture barrier to protect delicate coils and aluminum fins.
- Secure the box or crate to a pallet, strap through skids (not over coil surfaces), and mark Do Not Stack; e.g., 42×26×18 in., 120 lb still ships Class 150.
- For depot replenishment, combine multiple small evaporators in one crate with dividers and edge pads so pieces don’t abrade during LTL handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 150 removes density calculations, speeding quotes and reducing the risk of carrier reclass charges.
- Packaging clarity (boxes or crates) aligns with carrier rules, cutting OS&D claims and avoiding costly repack or reship scenarios.
- Single classification covers units with or without doors, shelves, or freezing trays, simplifying SKU paperwork and routing guides.
- Non-hazardous component expands carrier choices and avoids hazmat surcharges, improving lane flexibility and transit times.
