How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Protect cutting edges with guards or sleeves, wrap in rust-inhibiting paper, then place blades on boards or in heavy-duty boxes to prevent edge-to-edge contact.
- Block and brace inside the box, or band knives to a backing board; add desiccants and label “Knives, wood chipping machine” with part numbers and orientation arrows.
- List NMFC 123950 and Class 60 on the BOL to avoid reclass; do not describe as generic metal parts, which can trigger extra charges.
- For mill returns or resharpening loops, reuse sturdy boards and edge covers, and keep each box to a manageable lift to reduce handling damage on docks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes, reducing reclass fees and unexpected accessorials.
- Proper boxed or board-mounted packing lowers edge damage, preventing costly downtime for sawmills, pulp operations, and biomass processors.
- Non-hazardous status speeds carrier acceptance and minimizes paperwork, improving transit reliability for routine knife replenishments.
- Consistent classification streamlines OEM and grinder return programs, enabling predictable freight budgets across sharpen-and-return cycles.
