How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Box each shipment: use sturdy corrugated boxes with inner dividers, poly bags, and thread protectors or caps to shield nipples and threads from crush or abrasion.
- Keep parts dry and clean: separate any oily components from packaging with liners or absorbent pads, and avoid packing with containers of grease to prevent leaks or hazmat confusion.
- Mark it right: list NMFC 124500 and your selected class (within 70–92.5) on the BOL, include part counts/SKUs, and label as “Threaded Components – Protect From Crush.”
- For multi-box moves, palletize: use a 48×40 pallet, cornerboards, two straps plus stretch wrap, and keep stack heights low if cups have protruding fittings.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Non-hazardous status speeds dock handling and avoids hazmat surcharges, keeping accessorial costs down.
- Three-subclass range (70–92.5) lets you match the correct listing and avoid reclass fees by documenting boxed prep and contents clearly.
- Damage reduction from thread and nipple protection cuts claims, returns, and costly downtime for OEM and MRO customers.
- Efficient inner packs and master cartons improve handling density and reduce touches, supporting better LTL pricing and faster turnarounds.
