How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use a heavy-duty box or factory carton with dense foam blocking to immobilize the motor, brushes, and control panel. Lock or tape the coin acceptor door and bag the coin drawer.
- Keep the item “in boxes” to maintain Class 100. If palletizing, place the sealed box on a 48x40 pallet and strap it—do not ship the bare machine or a crate in place of a box.
- Note the description on the BOL: “Machines, shoe shining, automatic, coin or currency operated, in boxes – NMFC 124680, Class 100.” This helps prevent reclass or inspection delays.
- Remove or secure polish reservoirs and any loose accessories. Even non-hazardous contents can leak or shift, so cap, bag, and cushion them inside the box.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: Fixed Class 100 eliminates density calculations, reducing surprise reclass fees and speeding up LTL quotes.
- Simplified compliance: Non-hazardous machinery avoids hazmat surcharges and special paperwork, streamlining multi-stop facility rollouts.
- Damage control: Boxed packaging aligns with carrier handling for vending-style equipment, lowering claim risk and improving shelf-ready arrivals.
- Negotiation leverage: A standard NMFC for these machines supports consistent rating in contracts, aiding vending and facilities service providers in budgeting.
