How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item is a zinc lathe and packaged in a rigid box or crate; use fixed Class 92.5 for LTL quotes without density calculations.
- Block, brace, and bolt the bed and headstock to skid runners; cushion the ways and ship chucks, toolposts, and guards in separate inner boxes.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity; design a 4-way pallet base or forklift pockets to prevent tilting and chain-lift damage at terminals.
- Apply corrosion prevention: VCI wrap, desiccant packs, and a sealed liner inside the crate to protect zinc surfaces during long transits or storage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs: fixed Class 92.5 removes density disputes and reclass fees, stabilizing LTL rates for machine shops and distributors.
- Damage reduction: compliant boxing/crating minimizes spindle, way, and alignment issues, lowering OS&D claims and service downtime.
- Faster processing: non-hazmat machinery avoids hazmat surcharges and paperwork, accelerating dock handling and cross-dock transfers.
- Operational consistency: a single NMFC for boxed or crated units streamlines pricing, RMAs, service swaps, and multi-branch fulfillment.
