How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- On the BOL, list: “Ore roasting or smelting furnaces or parts, NOI — NMFC 125480 — Class 85” to prevent reclass disputes.
- Mount heavy housings on steel skids and through-bolt the frame; block and brace inside a crate. Protect controls, thermocouples, and ports with guards or caps.
- Mark lift points and center of gravity. Add “Do Not Tip” and orientation arrows; specify crane or forklift capacity at pickup to avoid failed attempts.
- For parts like burners, tuyeres, hoods, or duct sections, use foam-lined crates and banded pallets; wrap refractory components to prevent edge chipping.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 enables predictable LTL quotes and easier rate benchmarking across vendors and lanes.
- Non-hazardous classification avoids hazmat surcharges and special documentation, streamlining tendering.
- Accurate NMFC wording reduces reclass fees, inspections, and delay-driven accessorials.
- Robust crating and securement cut damage claims and production downtime during furnace installs or rebuilds.
