How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the longest side including handles and spouts; class is dimension-based, so oversized levers or brackets raise the shipping class.
- Choose packaging to fit the profile: compact pumps box well; protruding levers or fragile castings travel safer in a crate with foam blocking.
- Cap all inlets/outlets and immobilize moving parts (handles, linkages) with banding or zip ties to prevent carrier damage and reclass charges.
- If shipping long pump columns or rods separately, list them as distinct line items; keeping the pump itself under standard length avoids oversize fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Right-size packaging to hit lower classes (77.5–125) when possible, reducing LTL rates versus shipping the same pump as an oversize item.
- Dimension-driven classification is predictable, enabling accurate quotes and fewer invoice corrections or costly reclassifications.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and lanes, improving transit times for ag, municipal, and service replacement shipments.
- Crated protection on cast housings cuts claim risk, preserving margins on heavy machinery parts with tight replacement lead times.
