How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the part fits this listing: cast or forged dipper fronts, lips, nose plates, bucket parts, A-frame legs, eye bars, or truck arch bars that are not machine finished. If faces are precision-machined or drilled to tolerance, classification may change.
- Package for weight and edges: band parts to a solid pallet or steel skid with edge guards, block and brace to stop roll or slide, and add VCI wrap or oil to deter rust. Example: two nose plates banded with steel strapping to a 48×40 pallet, corners protected, stretch-wrapped.
- Mark safe handling: label center of gravity and lift points, keep pallet overhang to zero, and target stack heights under 48 inches for LTL. Use cradles for curved lips or arch bars to prevent shifting.
- Document clearly: write “NMFC 130060, Class 65 – cast/forged bucket parts, not machine finished” on the BOL. Include piece count, total weight, and dimensions for routing, even though density is not used for this class.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 65 eliminates density calculations, reducing reclass disputes and surprise charges for heavy, rugged steel parts.
- No hazmat overhead: these non-hazardous items avoid hazmat fees and special handling surcharges, improving net freight cost.
- Lower damage risk when packed right: sturdy metal parts plus edge protection and proper blocking cut OS&D claims and keep projects on schedule.
- Consolidation made simple: ship mixed sets—lips, eye bars, and A-frame legs—under the same NMFC when conditions match, streamlining quotes and paperwork.
