How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Specify “cast or forged, not machine finished” bucket or dipper teeth (including tooth bases and points) on the BOL to match NMFC 130065 Class 55.
- Palletize tightly: cap sharp points, interleave with hardwood dunnage, and steel-band in two directions. Example: 24 teeth on a 48x40 pallet with no overhang.
- Choose robust packaging for loose parts—wood crates or heavy bins—and use edge protectors under bands to prevent strap cut-in and shifting.
- Provide exact piece count, total weight, and pallet dimensions for LTL rating even though class is fixed; note nonhazardous status to avoid hazmat delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 55—fewer density disputes and reclass fees for dense metal wear parts.
- Lower cost per hundredweight versus higher classes, helping control rates on heavy, compact shipments.
- Nonhazardous designation streamlines carrier acceptance and reduces compliance overhead.
- Durable parts tolerate tight unitization, enabling better cube utilization and reduced handling damage.
