How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List on the BOL as “Pinions or Racks, NMFC 130070, Class 65.” This is a fixed class, so no density calculation is needed, but still include pieces, weight, and dimensions for quoting.
- For long gear racks, prevent bending: cap ends, wrap teeth with VCI paper, add wood cleats every 3–4 ft, and band the bundle tight to a 4-way pallet with edge guards.
- For pinion gears, use heavy-wall tubes or partitioned crates to stop tooth chipping. Cushion with corrugated pads and keep grease or rust inhibitor contained with poly liners.
- Avoid overhang and mixed IDs like “steel bars.” Mark the center of gravity on heavy bundles and use a load-bearing top if you need stackability during LTL moves.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing: fixed Class 65 eliminates density disputes and reduces the risk of reclass fees on gear components.
- Lower claims: proper blocking and tooth protection sharply cut damage from chipped teeth, corrosion, or bent racks.
- Faster quoting and tendering: one NMFC for both pinions and racks speeds rate shopping across carriers.
- Better trailer fit: correctly bundled long racks avoid linear-foot penalties and improve loading efficiency on standard LTL equipment.
