How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle long, narrow steel edges or shoes on solid pallets; add edge guards and tight banding to prevent scuffing and tip damage during LTL moves.
- Print NMFC 130190 and Class 55 on the BOL; group pieces by length and note bundle weights to speed cross-dock handling and reduce misroutes.
- Use blocking and 2x4 dunnage between layers; avoid overhang and keep the center of gravity low so forklifts can lift without flexing the steel.
- If pieces exceed standard LTL length limits, choose carriers with long-freight allowances or switch to flatbed to avoid length surcharges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 minimizes density disputes and reclass fees, creating predictable LTL pricing for rugged steel wear parts.
- Dense, durable commodity stacks efficiently, lowering cost per pound versus higher-class items and reducing damage claims.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and routing, helping meet tight winter service windows for municipalities and contractors.
- Standardized bundles and pallet footprints enable consolidation with other fleet parts, cutting pickups and accessorial charges.
