How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to the build: boxed for lighter aluminum beams, crated for heavy steel or beams with large heads. Use V‑blocks or saddles so the barrel cannot roll.
- Protect heads and journals with foam, caps, and edge protectors under steel or poly banding to prevent marring and out‑of‑round damage.
- If shipping without heads, wrap the barrel in moisture barrier film plus corrugated, then band to a skid; add desiccant for ocean or humid routes.
- For LTL, secure to a 4‑way pallet with chocks and through‑bolts where possible. Mark center of gravity, ‘Do Not Stack,’ and ‘Lift From Ends’ when heads overhang.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Choosing the correct class within 60–100 improves quoting accuracy and helps avoid costly reclass and inspection fees.
- Purpose‑built crating and blocking reduces head and journal damage, cutting claim rates and preventing loom downtime at mills.
- Forklift‑ready skids speed cross‑dock handling and reduce special rigging or rehandling charges, improving transit reliability.
- Clear labeling and packaging consistency streamline carrier acceptance, supporting better freight rates and predictable lead times.
