How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 131570 and Class 85 on the BOL, and describe the commodity as “steel garnett/lickerin wire clothing, barbed, in packages” for clean, accurate rating.
- Pack sharp barbs inside: wrap with heavy kraft or oil-resistant paper, add edge guards or rubber caps over teethed rows, then box or case to prevent snags and punctures.
- Control corrosion: line packages with VCI wrap or poly, add desiccant for humid routes, and seal cartons tightly to keep steel teeth rust‑free on longer hauls.
- Stabilize each package for LTL: use tight banding or stretch-wrap to a pallet with no overhang, label orientation and “Sharp Components Inside,” and keep rows facing inward.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Single Class 85 simplifies quoting and tendering, giving predictable LTL rates for recurring shipments of wire clothing.
- Damage prevention packaging reduces claim risk from exposed barbs, protecting precision teeth and cutting downtime at textile mills and recyclers.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat fees, improving routing flexibility and cost control.
- Clear NMFC alignment lowers reclass and inspection disputes, speeding dock turns and reducing surprise accessorials.
