How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to class: fully crated or boxed units typically rate lower than loose or pallet-only pieces. Use the higher class if the attachment ships exposed.
- Protect hydraulics on grapples and auger drives—cap quick couplers, secure hoses, and lock cylinders to prevent drips and transit damage.
- Palletize heavy steel implements with blocking and edge guards. Example: a 72-in box blade on 4x6 runners, two cross-deck boards, and at least two 2-inch straps.
- Mark center of gravity and no-fork zones on wide blades or rakes. Add lift points if needed to keep forks off cutting edges and tines.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Packaging for the lower class (70) can trim LTL spend by 5–12% versus shipping loose at the higher class.
- Crated or well-blocked attachments load faster on docks, reducing handling time and the chance of OS&D claims.
- Clear NMFC alignment lowers reclass risk, minimizing inspection fees and invoice disputes.
- One listing covers varied implements—auger drives, bale spears, grapples—streamlining quotes and routing for dealers and rental fleets.
