How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle channels by uniform lengths using steel or poly strapping with edge protectors; add wood runners so flanges aren’t crushed on the floor.
- For long lengths (over 8–12 ft), mark center of gravity and apply overlength labels to reduce fork damage and avoid unexpected handling fees.
- Nest channels back-to-back or face-to-face to cut void space; cap and wrap ends to stop telescoping and shield sharp edges during transit.
- Print NMFC 13340 - Class 60 and piece counts on the BOL and each package label to prevent reclassifications and inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing at fixed Class 60 minimizes rating disputes and rebills on aluminum channel shipments.
- Package-based classification removes density math, speeding spot quotes and routing decisions for construction and OEM replenishment.
- Tight bundling and edge protection lower damage claims on long extrusions, reducing reshipments and accessorial costs.
- Clear Aluminum Group identification streamlines carrier handling and helps maintain on-time deliveries to jobsites and fabricators.
