How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select NMFC 13492 when shipping sheet aluminum highway guardrails nested together, with ends or caps removed or shipped detached, and mark Class 60 on the BOL.
- Bundle W‑beam or thrie‑beam panels face-to-face with wood spacers at thirds, then secure with PET/steel banding and edge protectors; bag or crate detached ends/caps inside the bundle.
- Plan for length handling: flag overlength bundles (often 12–25 ft), request side loading or long-fork capability, and budget for carrier overlength surcharges when applicable.
- Protect against bending and scuffing: place dunnage under each bundle, block and brace to prevent mid-span flex, prohibit top-stacking, and label ‘Do Not Fork Between Bands.’
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 rating reduces reclass risk and invoice disputes, giving predictable LTL quotes for long aluminum rail bundles.
- Nesting allowances and detached ends minimize cube and snags, improving handling efficiency and helping secure better linehaul rates.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and expands carrier options, speeding tendering and dock throughput.
- Purpose-built packaging guidance lowers damage frequency on long, lightweight sections, cutting claim costs and delivery delays.
